Benji is attacking poor Spot! For three days now he won't let her out of the coop and eat, so I feed her separately. When she does come out, he corners her and pecks. Saturday I was going to put him down, but didn't because he doesn't bother her when they are out of the pen. She just stays away from him.
Benji does not go after Chipper:
Poor Spot - she is sooo sweet! Loves to be held and cuddled!
It's way too late to get new hens - it was freezing yesterday morning:
Even though the girls don't lay eggs anymore, I want them to have a good life, and if I
could find Benji a good home, I would give him away, but no one wants a rooster....
:o(
They are strange animals, CM.
ReplyDeleteI love the birds too, but sometimes the best thing to do is knock some heads off.
I'm very, very close to it, Glen. Either that or he is going to be a lonely rooster through this winter.....
DeleteIs Benji letting you know something is wrong with Spot, since chickens will bully the weakest bird?
ReplyDeleteYes, they do Judy, But I only have the two hens now. All the others from that batch I bought have died. Benji is the only healthy one that I bought from that woman down the road.
ReplyDeleteNEVER again! I'll order chicks next year. I hate losing them.
The best batch of chicks I picked up were fall-run chicks from the local farm store. They stayed in the house a little longer until they had enough body weight to go outside. But they were the healthiest, best layers I every had. Never ordered any, cause I only wanted 4 or 5 at a time.
DeleteOur local farm store didn't have any this fall - she said she will have RI Red pullets in stock in late April. I'll pick out six! (or maybe more) :o)
