Have you ever wondered where.....

.......  Japanese silk comes from?

Well, wonder no more!

Japanese silk is silk harvested in Japan. The silk industry was dominant from the 1930s to 1950s, but is less common now. Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The best-known silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm.

Brrrrrr!

 The cold blast moving in:

It had been 50 degrees before it starting dropping:

It didn't bother the neighbor horses though:

That evening:

The gang made it through the bitter cold just fine - the first day of the freeze, they stayed in the coop for most of the day. Even got two eggs out of 'em!

Didn't take any pics outside during the storm - the camera battery kept dying out -

 it doesn't like cold weather!

'Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!!

Next, it's the Grand Canyon Railway in the middle of winter. Then we're back to the Pacific Northwest for a look at the Mount Rainier Railroad, the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, and finally Southern Pacific 4449 on the Holiday Express! Quiet before the storm

I guess some of you have had that cold winter blast by now. We will get it today (Friday).

Let the gang out so I could get the coop and pen ready:

 Emptied and cleaned the coop....

..... and put down lots and lots of shavings and hay:

( I also packed the spaces under the windows to keep out any drafts).

Cleaned the pen and put down fresh hay and plastic around the sides of it.

(Have no idea why I took this pic!)

Yesterday we had rain and sleet all day long:

Ice started to form on the gate already:

All tucked in for the night:

 Stay safe out there!

..... ever wondered how they are made!

Today's funny :o)

 H/T to Donna!

Not much....

.... to show for the weekend this time:

 Coyote tracks in the snow:

They led right to the coop!

We hear them every night out in the back. Sometimes we see them in the daytime, but not too often.

Not too much going on - thankfully! All the holiday shopping is done except for a trip to Acme to get some fresh veggies. Will probably do that on Wednesday before we get the big snow storm heading our way. I hope the weather gurus are wrong about this one.....

But anyway, here are some pretty sunset pics!

Happy Christmas time everyone! This Christmas steam railroad special features the Polar Express song Believe. The Polar Express is my favorite Christmas movie and my favorite Christmas classic. The Polar Express song is so amazing. This video features the Nevada Northern, Sumpter Valley, Grand Canyon Railway, Durango & Silverton, Cumbres & Toltec, Heber Valley, and the Reading & Northern. It also features my favorite mainline steam stars Union Pacific 844 and 4014. And of course the Pere Marquette 1225 which was the basis for the Polar Express locomotive. I hope you have a safe and fun Christmas time. Music from Polar Express Videos from Steam Train Videos, Pentrex, Railway Productions, and 7 Idea Productions

Stuff you never think about

 Corks!!!!

Wine corks are a stopper used to seal wine bottles. They are typically made from cork (bark of the cork oak). Half of the world's cork wine stoppers come from Portugal's cork oak trees. These trees are so important to the country's ecosystem and economy, they're protected under Portuguese law.Go inside the forests of Alentejo to see how the cork bark is carefully harvested every nine years so it doesn't hurt the trees.
